GLOSSARY

MGU-K: motor generator unit – kinetic

MGU-H: motor generator unit – heat

ERS: Energy Recovery System (referring to the unit as a whole)

MJ: Mega Joules, so 1 million joules.

Joule: unit of measurement of energy, knowing that 1000 joules = 1 kW

(so 1.34 hp over a second), 8 MJ = 10.738 horsepower over a second.

I’m still lost in the insanity that there will be 4 factory backed P1 teams at Le Mans this year. And they’re all so wildly different implementations of the rule book. If only Peugeot had stuck around to give us a 5th.

I <3 WEC

arent there some differences between which power sources drive which wheels?

would be interesting to include.

PORSCHE 919 HYBRID

AUDI R18 E-TRON QUATTRO

Max Speed 340 km/h

I thought the porsche had more top speed this year? then again spa & silverstone are a different animal

Audi R18 e-tron quattro:

Engine: 4.0l turbocharged diesel V6

Layout: Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive

Hybrid Energy Class: 4 megajoules (per La Sarthe lap)

Hybrid Storage: GKN Hybrid Power flywheel motor-generator unit

Hybrid Harvesting: Front axle kinetic motor-generator unit

Power Output: Claimed >558 horsepower from engine, plus >272 horsepower from ERS, resulting in claimed peak total of >830 horsepower (actually: probably 1000)

Porsche 919 Hybrid:

Engine: 2.0l turbocharged petrol V4

Layout: Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive

Hybrid Energy Class: 8 megajoules

Hybrid Storage: Liquid-cooled A123 lithium polymer battery pack

Hybrid Harvesting: Front axle kinetic motor-generator unit, turbocharger-mounted thermal motor-generator unit

Power Output: Claimed >500 horsepower from engine, plus >400 horsepower from ERS, resulting in claimed peak total of >900 horsepower (reality: probably 1100)

Toyota TS040 Hybrid:

Engine: 3.7l normally aspirated petrol V8

Layout: Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive

Hybrid Energy Class: 6 megajoules

Hybrid Storage: Nisshinbo supercapacitor bank

Hybrid Harvesting: Asymmetric front and rear axle kinetic motor-generator units (Aisin motor in front, Denso motor in rear)

Power Output: Claimed peak total of >986 horsepower (reality: again, probably 1100)

Nissan GTR LM NISMO:

Engine: 3.0l twin-turbocharged petrol V6, built by Cosworth

Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel drive

Hybrid Energy Class: 2 megajoules expected

Hybrid Storage: Torotrak contra-rotating flywheel assemblage

Hybrid Harvesting: Front axle flybrid clutched transmission

Power Output: Claimed 550 horsepower from engine, plus 700 horsepower expected from ERS, resulting in claimed peak total hopes of 1250 horsepower

Differential Strengths & Weaknesses:

Audi:

Strength: Downforce / aerodynamic grip, cornering speeds,

Strength: Repairability, modularity,

Weakness: Straight-line speed

Porsche:

Strength: Sustained hybrid power, straight-line speed,

Strength: Fuel efficiency,

Weakness: Reliability, complexity

Toyota:

Strength: Mechanical grip, tire efficiency, reliability,

Strength: Burst hybrid power,

Weakness: Numerical disadvantage at Le Mans, slight overall pace disadvantage so far

Nissan:

Expected Strength: Low drag, high straight-line speed,

Expected Weakness: Lack of experience, possibly reliability, ? Wild card !

I like the Claimed peak total & probably figures.

In theory, they do.

But Audi heavily improved the aerodynamics this year, compensating for a less powerful propulsion system.

You know, if they routed the exhaust to the front wing instead of making you eat it, they’re gonna get a bit more downforce, sorta like exhaust-blown diffusers.

EDIT: Wait that won’t work at all.
